2013 Fiesta de Indepedencia Capitol crowd
Fiesta del Grito de Independencia
The major annual event is the Fiesta de el Grito de Independencia, which takes place each year on the South Steps of the State Capitol. The Fiesta is sponsored by the Fiesta de Independencia Foundation, the Consul General of Mexico, Univision, and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus.
For the past five years, the celebration had been successfully held at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center until 2013, when the Fiesta de el Grito was relocated to the grounds of the State Capitol and taken to a new historic level of participation, with Univision providing support and resources
This family oriented celebration is alcohol free and features Mexican and Tejano music, Folklorico Dancers, and food vendor booths. The highlight of the evening is the re-enactment of “El Grito”, by the Consul General of Mexico.
This year, at the State Capitol, the event drew a crowd of 10,000. Expenses are paid by sponsorships from corporations and individuals. In addition to paying for the costs of the event, a portion of the money is earmarked to pay for scholarships.
